Rovers announced the first signing
of the summer today with Andy Sandell joining the Gas from Bath
City, where he has enjoyed a successful season and played
an important role in helping the club to the Southern League Premier
play-offs. Winger Sandell made 42 appearances for the Romans in 2005/6
and scored eight goals, as well as acting as provider for plenty
more, and his performances earned him seven man of the match awards.
Sandell
had been at Bath City for just under a year, joining them from Paulton
Rovers in July 2005 for a fee of £1500 (plus a
reported 50% sell-on clause). He had been top scorer at Paulton the
previous season and his performances attracted interest from a number
of local sides.
This season too Sandell has caught the eye, notably
of Kenny Jackett. He had a trial at Swansea at the end of 2005 and
was widely reported to be on the verge of signing for the League
One club in the January transfer window. That move didn’t materialise
however and he has since been linked with a host of other clubs including
Salisbury City and Forest Green Rovers.
The twenty-two year old winger
was previously a trainee at Bristol City as a teenager and also played
for Malmesbury and Melksham Town before his Paulton Rovers stint.
His signing will please plenty of Gasheads who have long hankered
for a return to the policy of scouring local non-league clubs for
talent. If it is followed by more shrewd acquisitions throughout
the summer then we could see the result that we all want: a team
of hungry players with a real desire to win.
